About

Dear Grant County Citizen:

My name is Jim McWhirt, and it was my honor and privilege to represent you as an at-large member of the Grant County Council for fourteen years from January 1, 2005 through December 31, 2018, and as the Grant County Auditor for four years from January 1, 2019 through December 31, 2022.  Currently, I am a Republican candidate seeking your vote to return me to an at-large position on the County Council.

I have lived in Grant County, Indiana, since my family moved from Wabash County to the Sweetser area when I was six years old.  Janet, my wife of nearly forty-three years, and I reside in Sweetser.  We have two children.  Our son, Jim, works at the Walmart Distribution Center.  He lives in Elwood with his wife, Heather, and their daughter, Josephine.  Our daughter, Joni, is a middle school counselor.  She lives in Vigo County with her husband, Jacob, and their three children, Jaci, Jenson, and John.

I attended school in the Oak Hill system from first grade through my graduation in May 1976.

Following high school, I attended Indiana State University, graduating in May 1980 with a B.S. degree in Accounting.

I was employed as an auditor with the Indiana State Board of Accounts from May 1980 through June 1992, auditing many types of governmental agencies, including counties, cities, towns, hospitals, schools, townships, libraries, and license branches.  From July 1992 through September 2006 I was the Director of Business Affairs of the Mississinewa Community School Corporation.  From October 2006 through June 2010 I was the Business Director of the Franklin Township Community School Corporation in Marion County.  From July 2010 through December 2013 I was the Business Manager of the Marion Community Schools.  Throughout the years my responsibilities have included developing and maintaining annual budgets that total in excess of $85,000,000.

As you can see, my employment experiences, my fourteen years as a member of the Grant County Council, and my four years as the Grant County Auditor have given me a working knowledge of the budgetary process of local government and the opportunity to interact with many individuals involved in the management and oversight of all types of governmental agencies.  These experiences have prepared me to represent you as a county councilman for the upcoming four-year term.

Like you, I am concerned about the taxation and budgetary issues that face our county.  Therefore, I hope to once again use my abilities and experiences to make a difference in our local governmental operations.  Together we can make Grant County government as efficient and effective as possible.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter to become more familiar with me.  I urge you to vote in the upcoming primary election on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.  I would appreciate your support and vote in this campaign, and I would consider it an honor to be re-elected to represent the citizens of Grant County, Indiana, as a member of the Grant County Council.

                                                                  Sincerely,

                                                                  Jim

                                                                 James E. McWhirt

                                                                 Republican Candidate
